Some years ago I was planning my “Happily Ever After” wedding and we started talking about honeymoon plans. Your typical couple might consider the spectacular landscapes and heavenly beaches of Hawaii. Or perhaps, a tour of Europe to explore its many history-infused and naturally beautiful destinations. Instead, my husband and I were so excited to start planning our Dream Disney Honeymoon. Yes, we spent 5 fun-filled days at a Walt Disney World Resort, followed by a 3-day Bahamian Disney Cruise.
It’s a common belief that Disney is for kids or families only. That is simply not true. Disney offers many diverse experiences, that make it the perfect vacation for anyone - even adults only!
Take a look at all that there is to experience on an adults-only vacation to Walt Disney World.
World Showcase Epcot
There are 11 countries represented at
Epcot’s World Showcase, one of the most scenic areas of Walt Disney World. Italy, France, China, Canada, and Japan are just a few of the places you’ll visit on your journey around the world. Each pavilion provides an authentic experience for guests, by recreating famous landmarks. You will also find restaurants and souvenir shops which completely immerse you in the cultural experience. Furthermore, cast members in each of the pavilions come from the country they represent and they are always eager and happy to share their homeland stories with you. My husband and I particularly enjoy our time in the Italian pavilion, where we feast on authentic dishes such as calamari and wood-oven pizza. Being Italian myself, it is particularly special chatting it up with cast members, in our mother-tongue. World Showcase Epcot is a unique experience and a must-do for adults visiting Walt Disney World.
Dining Experiences
Often times when people think Disney food, they picture Mickey-shaped ice-cream bars and waffles. There is such a wide range of gourmet dining experiences to explore that adults will never have to settle for quick service meals. Two of my favourite signature restaurants are California Grill and Narcoossee’s. California Grill, perched atop the Contemporary Resort, offers guests the best of Californian cuisine as they take in the sights of Seven Seas Lagoon and the Magic Kingdom park. Among my choice dishes are the Cowboy-cut 19oz Ribeye Steak and the Grilled Pork Tenderloin with goat cheese polenta. I’ll never forget the magic of sipping champagne on California Grill’s outdoor terrace, as my husband and I watched the fireworks show from Magic Kingdom Park.
Narcoossee’s is a waterfront hideaway, found in the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. Here you will enjoy coastal cuisine while taking in spectacular, panoramic views of the lagoon. I thoroughly enjoyed my Butter-poached Twin Maine Lobster Tails, while my husband feasted on the Grilled Grass Fed Filet Mignon. It was also convenient to hop on the monorail from the Grand Floridian Resort and head over to Magic Kingdom to enjoy some Magic Hour rides after dark. In general, you will find signature dining restaurants throughout the Walt Disney World Resort. Whatever your taste and appetite, there is an exquisite meal waiting for you.
Thrill Rides & Experiences
Some adults who visited Walt Disney World as children, become nostalgic when they return as adults and can’t wait to go on rides like Haunted Mansion and Space Mountain. For other adults, thrill rides like Big Thunder Mountain and Test Track fulfill the adult “need-for-speed”. Aerosmith’s Rock ’N’ Roller Coaster at Hollywood Studios is a favourite of mine. Not only do I get to rock out to Aerosmith’s greatest hits, as I walk through the ride cue, but the tunes are pumping throughout the ride, from the moment you’re launched and accelerate from 0 to 57 mph in 2.8 seconds. If fast and furious isn’t really your style, then there’s plenty of out-of-this world, immersive experiences. Board Soarin’ at Epcot, and hand glide above some of the world’s most breathtaking wonders.
On our last visit to Walt Disney World, my husband and I were in awe of Pandora - The World of Avatar in the Animal Kingdom Park. The lush beauty of this land transforms from a vivid daytime beauty to a glorious, glowing nighttime experience. I would argue the ride Avatar Flight of Passage is probably one of the most spectacular rides you will ever experience - anywhere! This 3-D ride has you flying on the back of a banshee, exploring the beauty and wonder of the breathtaking Pandora landscape. The four theme parks and two waterparks at Walt Disney World, offer a plethora of experiences that will leave any adult asking for more.
Disney Springs Nightlife
After a morning at the parks and an afternoon lounging by the pool, you’ll be ready for a night out on the town. Destination - Disney Springs, formerly known as Downtown Disney. Here you will find shopping, restaurants and nightlife for guests over 21. One of our favourite shows at Disney Springs was La Nouba by Cirque de Soleil. It was a perfect end to a totally magical day. If music is more your style, then you definitely want to check out House of Blues or Raglan Road Irish Pub. Also, don’t forget to pop into Pandora and pick up a limited-edition, Walt Disney World exclusive charm to commemorate your special trip. Disney Springs has something for every adult.
Spa & Golf
Sometimes it’s nice to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the parks. For the golf enthusiast, Walt Disney World has four championship golf courses: each one impeccably maintained, with world class amenities and superlative designs. Most golfers avoid the bunkers, but on our honeymoon I was thrilled to land in the “Mickey bunker”.
If a relaxing massage is more your style, you will enjoy one of the many full-service spas located through the Walt Disney World Resort. Senses - A Disney Spa at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort transports you to a serene Floridian garden at the turn of the 20th century, while you experience a body and mind renewal. Their extensive menu of facials and massage therapies has something for everyone. Trust me, a day at Senses is the ultimate gift any adult can give themselves. You are worth it!
This is just a snapshot of what an “Adult Disney Vacation” might look like. Our Walt Disney World honeymoon was truly magical. It was the perfect way to begin our special journey together. We have been back several times since then, and even decided to bring the kids along on some of those trips…he he he!
If you’re an adult wondering if a Disney vacation is for you, remember, there’s no age limit on fun!
